Star Wars’ Lando Calrissian TV Show Update Given By Lucasfilm Head

By | June 10, 2022

Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy offers an update on Star Wars’ Lando Calrissian TV show, citing Donald Glover’s busy schedule as the main hurdle.

The Star Wars Lando Calrissian TV show has been given an update from Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy. Billy Dee Williams first brought the iconic character to life in The Empire Strikes Back as the leader of Cloud City and an old friend of Han Solo who betrays the heroes and turns them over to Darth Vader, only to reverse his decision and help most of the group escape from the Galactic Empire while Han is captured. Lando would initially return in Return of the Jedi as a general in the Rebel Alliance and help rescue Han from Jabba the Hutt.

Williams would reprise his role for a brief appearance in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the poorly received final installment in the franchise’s sequel trilogy and conclusion to the Skywalker Saga. As the franchise expanded into anthology territory, Donald Glover would take over the role of Lando for Solo: A Star Wars Story, which chronicled the origins of the titular smuggler, including his relationship with Lando, from whom he’d win the Millennium Falcon. The film’s box office failure would initially halt all future anthology plans until The Mandalorian helped restore these plans, including a Disney+ series centered on Lando from Dear White People creator Justin Simien.

While speaking with CinemaBlend at the Star Wars Celebration Event, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy shared a Lando TV show update. The studio head confirmed that Donald Glover is expected to lead the Disney+ series but that the multihyphenate’s busy schedule is keeping the show from making major progress. See what Kennedy said below:

“You need to ask Donald. He’s the one that holds all the cards here. But there’s no movement. I will say that honestly. But it’s not for lack of trying. It’s just that he’s a very busy guy. … He’s got another series, and I think one other thing, and then he’ll come our way. So patiently waiting.”

Kennedy’s update for the Lando TV show marks the first major confirmation of Glover’s involvement with the Star Wars series since it was first announced to be in the works in late 2020. Glover has played coy about whether he is involved with the show, pointing to his busy schedule of projects as leading him to work on a number of things while also departing some of them. Given Williams returned as Lando for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and was last seen promising to help former stormtrooper Jannah discover where she’s from, the door did seem open for him to return for the Lando TV show.

The Lando TV show update also comes as Kennedy has come under fire for her Star Wars recast comments, in which she initially said Lucasfilm wouldn’t recast any other legacy characters after Solo’s box office success. Many fans took to criticizing this decision, citing a wealth of material to explore for Han, Lando and more while also praising Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover’s performances in Solo. With Atlanta season 4 already in the can and Glover working on Mr. & Mrs. Smith and another series with Malia Obama at Prime Video, it seems unlikely Lando will make its way to screens any time soon.
